The 2022 Winter Olympics haven’t started according to plan for the United States.
Through four days, Team USA is without a gold medal. The squad does have four silvers, courtesy of athletes such as Julia Marino and Jaelin Kauf.
So, when will Team USA win its first gold medal? Here’s a look at some of the upcoming opportunities:
Men’s Speed Skating 1500m
Florida’s Joey Mantia will compete in the men’s speed skating 1500m for a chance to bring home USA’s first gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Mantia sits atop the World Cup standings as he competes at his third Winter Olympics. But he’ll face stiff competition from some elite Dutch skaters, including reigning Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis. Nuis won both the 1000m and 1500m at the 2018 games in Pyeonchang.
The race starts at 5:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
Women’s Cross-Country Skiing Individual Sprint Free
While Jessie Diggins missed out on a medal in the 15K Skiathlon, the American will be confident heading into Tuesday’s individual sprint event after winning the team sprint event in 2018.
Diggins’ gold was the first-ever for the USA in the event. Though Diggins is favored to medal, she will have to fend off some serious competitors. Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist is the 2021 World Cup champion in the event and will be looking to make a statement in her Olympic debut.
The event begins at 6:47 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
