Last year saw cinematic reboots of hit video games Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil, while 2022 will see the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and a new Super Mario movie starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy.
But before then, there’s the small matter of the Uncharted movie to see first.
Spider-Man star Tom Holland will be swapping spandex for treasure hunting in the highly anticipated 2022 movie adaptation of the Uncharted video game series.
It has been a long time coming – it first went into development way back in 2008 – but when can fans finally head to the cinema to see the first cinematic adventure of Nathan Drake?
When is the Uncharted movie released in the UK?
Uncharted will hit UK cinemas from Friday, February 11, 2022.
The release date of the film has shifted more than a booby-trapped temple, as directors and cast members have come and gone over development.
It was originally dated for June 10, 2016, but was later delayed to December 18, 2020, and then to March 5, 2021, after Travis Knight departed as director.
It was further delayed to October 8, 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, before shifting again to February 11, 2022, in the UK.
It will hit US cinemas a week later on February 18.
What is the plot of the Uncharted movie?
Uncharted is set to act as a prequel to the video game series, showing Nathan Drake as a young man on his first adventure with reluctant mentor figure Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan.
The official synopsis from the film’s website reads:
‘Street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.
‘What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.
‘If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate’s long-lost brother…but only if they can learn to work together.’
The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer – best known for Venom and the Zombieland movies – with a script written by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
Who is in the Uncharted cast?
Tom Holland will be bringing Nathan ‘Nate’ Drake to life, with Mark Wahlberg alongside him as Sully.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Holland, 25, discussed the challenges of playing Drake, and how it differs from playing someone like Peter Parker.
‘One of the most difficult things about this character was playing “the cool guy.”’ he said.
‘Historically, I’ve always sort of played the outsider who doesn’t particularly have many friends and isn’t the cool kid. So Nathan Drake is the complete opposite, and that was something that took me a while to get used to and feel comfortable doing.’
Wahlberg, 50 – who was once rumoured to play Drake back in early development – enjoyed the chance to play a big brother figure to Holland.
‘I never got to be the big brother. I was always the little brother, so I was always kind of picked on and treated [badly] by my brothers’ he told ET Canada.
‘I was always feisty and nipping at the heels,’ Wahlberg added. ‘And Tom was the same way. He wasn’t afraid to the point where he wouldn’t try to, you know to really step up. Especially when we were improvising and really kind of going at it.’
‘He’s done a great job. And he was a good little brother to have for sure’ added the Transformers actor.
Antonio Banderas will be on villain duties as Santiago Moncada, a man also on the hunt for the treasure, while Grey’s Anatomy actress Sophia Ali will play Nate’s love interest Chloe.
