Actor, comedian, producer and screenwriter Keegan-Michael Key was the host of this year’s NFL Honors show. For the most part, Key was entertaining, but one of his jokes won’t sit well with Kansas City Chiefs fans.
The joke involved taking a shot at both Bengals QB Joe Burrow’s fashion sense and Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ performance in the second half of the AFC championship game. He went through and made fun of some outfits that NFL players wore to the awards show, but also put up a picture of Burrow’s pregame fit from the AFC championship game. Key began by roasting Burrow for his wardrobe choice.
“Have you guys seen what Joe Burrow wore at the AFC championship?” Key said of Burrow’s outfit. “You see this? Like just a ‘Shaft’ wannabe over here. I mean, c’mon, now that is a look, that is a look right there. I mean I love this. That’s that drip right there. This is straight from the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson puberty catalog.”
This is when the subject of Key’s joke abruptly changed and Mahomes became the target.
“I’ve got to tell you, I dig it,” Key continued. “I dig it. I mean, this outfit, this outfit is so mind-blowing (that) Patrick Mahomes saw a picture of this outfit at halftime and forgot how to play football.”
Chiefs TE Travis Kelce wasn’t having any of it, nor was his girlfriend Kayla Nicole. Kelce is both a fashionable guy and a good teammate, so that one just didn’t sit right with him.
“Forgive me, Travis,” Key pleaded as he noticed Kelce’s reaction. “Travis is like, ‘Oh man, you were my friend.’”
It’s safe to say that Key won’t be getting a Christmas card from Mahomes and Kelce this year.
