Australians in 2022 are holding onto smartphones longer, being up to four years now compared to two years almost a decade ago.

The speed of innovation and change in smartphones makes our need to upgrade less compelling than in the earlier days of the iPhone.

The best time of year to buy a new smartphone varies from brand to brand.

Many brands will offer a benefit to pre-order their latest smartphone and receive it on launch day.

A pre-order benefit could be a pair of headphones or music subscription and is an extra incentive to being part of the launch.

Picking that time to buy your next phone means it will be the latest model for at least 12 months from that moment but it does mean you’ll pay it’s highest possible price.

All smartphones reduce in price over time.

For non-Apple devices you will generally see them reduced from as soon as three months after their launch and even further as the next model release comes around.

While pre-order benefits are tempting, the reductions over a short period of time usually outweigh that initial offering.

When it comes to Apple devices you will generally see all models sold at the same price until the day the next model is announced. At this point a reduction of around $300 impacts the outgoing model, which could be the bargain you were looking for.

While Apple doesn’t offer pre-order discounts or bundles, you will see telecommunication providers offer incentives.

Anyone can order their new iPhone from Apple directly, however if you are also planning on modifying your monthly plan with your provider it can bring added benefits.

Historically we have seen special offers from providers that are brought in to coincide with an iPhone launch. Special offers can include added monthly data allowances, streaming services provided for free or billing credits.

Timing is critical and looking at history will help ensure you are buying at the right time.
