The San Francisco 49ers will likely trade their starting quarterback since 2017, Jimmy Garoppolo. It’s probably less likely that the team will get a first-round pick for the veteran signal-caller—not that many felt that was a possibility. The betting favorite for Garoppolo’s new NFL home remains the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is a winner, and with a talented roster around him, a team could go far. Garoppolo and the 49ers went to the NFC Championship Game in two of the past three seasons and had a Super Bowl appearance. The quarterback owns a regular-season record of 31-14 with San Francisco. So, why trade him?The 49ers have Garoppolo’s successor on the roster, last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance. The young quarterback is expected to be the team’s Week 1 starter next season.San Francisco will likely try to do right by Garoppolo, attempting to send him to a contender—preferably one out of the conference. The quarterback-needy Steelers seem like a good fit.”If [Garoppolo] does [leave], he deserves to go to a great situation,” Lance said during the week leading to the Super Bowl, “so I think they’re going to make sure they do get that done if Jimmy does leave.”While the Steelers make a lot of sense, one NFL reporter calls the interest in Garoppolo “lukewarm.” That’s not good news for the 49ers, who probably hope trading their quarterback away is worthwhile—aside from the obvious salary-cap savings.”Interest in guys like Jimmy Garoppolo and Carson Wentz is lukewarm as best I can tell, while some rumblings about Kirk Cousins and Matt Ryan have picked up,” wrote Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is making headlines after suggesting that the 49ers trading Garoppolo may not be the lock everyone assumes it to be, implying that Lance may be “further behind than people realized.”If the compensation for Garoppolo isn’t what the 49ers hope, might they be willing to pay his salary for one more year and then receive a compensatory pick when he leaves in 2023?Said Schefter: “Now you can say, ‘Jimmy Garoppolo is unquestionably one of the most popular and respected players in our locker room. Players love playing with him. We have him under contract this year at a very friendly $25 million cap number. And if we play with him this year, and we lose him after this year, we’re going to get a third-round comp pick back in return.'”We knew the 49ers’ quarterback situation would make for some interesting early-offseason chatter, and it certainly has. That is unlikely to stop until Garoppolo’s fate has been determined.

Bucs reporter calls 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo a ‘serviceable’ heir to Tom Brady
Could Jimmy Garoppolo end up being the heir to Tom Brady anyway? One Tampa Bay sports reporter, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times, believes the San Francisco 49ers quarterback starting for the Buccaneers in 2022 isn’t far-fetched.
“While perhaps not a sexy pick to replace Brady, he’s a serviceable and mostly successful one,” wrote Knight.
It seems inconceivable that the Buccaneers, after tasting success over the past two seasons, would pass on acquiring a veteran quarterback following Brady’s retirement. Could Garoppolo be an option, though?
While the 49ers quarterback is 33-14 as a starter, many will
Why Mike Florio wouldn’t be shocked to see 49ers keep Jimmy Garoppolo
Almost everyone expects the San Francisco 49ers to trade Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, officially transitioning to 21-year-old Trey Lance at quarterback. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes that will happen too. However, that doesn’t mean the 49ers deciding to hold onto Garoppolo for one more season would shock the seasoned—and sometimes polarizing—NFL analyst.
Florio was convinced the 49ers would part with Garoppolo before this past September despite the team’s decision-makers insisting the plan was to have Lance sit and learn during his rookie season. Leading to the draft, San Francisco certainly looked like a team desperately seeking to replace Garoppolo, with head coach Kyle Shanahan even
Garafolo: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s no-trade clause ends on March 16 but talks to begin soon
Everything points to the San Francisco 49ers trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. When and to whom remains the question. The team is expected to transition to Trey Lance in 2022, offloading this past season’s starter and his $26.95 million salary-cap hit.
On Sunday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo discussed the plan for the 49ers quarterback and why March 16 is an somewhat-important date.
“49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, emotional after the playoff loss here (at SoFi Stadium) a couple of weeks ago, knowing it’s likely Trey Lance, and not him as the team’s starting quarterback in 2022,” Garafolo said on-air. “Now, Garoppolo has a no-trade clause for the next 31 days. It expires at the start of the league year on March 16. But I’m told that’s not a
How desperate could Washington become in potential trade for 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo?
What happens if Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson remain with their respective teams—the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks? A down year for draft-eligible quarterbacks could force quarterback-needy teams to overpay in the trade market.
That would bode well for the San Francisco 49ers, who are expected to part ways with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, a quarterback with a career record of 33-14 as a starter. Could a team like the Washington Commanders become desperate enough for an upgrade to acquire the 49ers starter from the past four-and-a-half seasons?
The Commanders may seek a new face for the offense, and Garoppolo might be an excellent fit depending on what Washington does on offense next
