MX Player tried to revive its image of a semi-pornographic platform with Campus Diaries. College, campus, chit chat and the memories are one that everyone lives for, but did the new show (or, should I call it, the revival show), do justice to change the platform’s image or was it a futile attempt with less benefit and more corrosion?
It’s a given that Rome didn’t get built in a day, and so one series alone cannot revive a platform’s image. The show or series was a subtle attempt with a big problem.
It’s become common these days, especially in the Indian Web Series context, that they believe foul language or steamy scenes can help uplift the show. One can understand that most people, especially youngsters find abuse as cool and trendy, but that’s not true in the real world. The campus texture was to the fullest, and most people lose their virginity in college, but that’s not a confirmed thing as some lose it before or after those days, too. Steamy scenes, and the use of foul language, as if the show was for the Ullu platform, makes you feel bad that the valuable aspect got wasted.
The Uncommon Sense girl turned up to show no common sense or add value to the series. The show would have gone downhill if Harsh Beniwal wasn’t there in the show/series. The series touched some valid factors and left like someone turned you on and then left you in that state. The creators didn’t dive into the problems and made ragging (a criminal offense in Indian colleges) look cool or as if there’s nothing wrong with it. Glad that this wasn’t the Indian flick Atrangi Re that poked fun at Mental Health issues.
What saddens me the most as an Indian writer and reviewer is that it sets a negative image of the Indian college system where verbal abuse and steamy moments get portrayed in the name of creativity. After creating such mediocre content, we mention why the International series makes sense. It’s like after making Radhe, Antim, Dabbang and Race 3 style movies, we think we would get an Oscar. Web Series should contribute something and leave a lasting impression.
If the creators and the platform of Campus Diaries have some understanding, please look into it. Please soul search where you stand, amongst the kind of Indian series, that have been made by Indian creators in the last two years alone.
