MLB News: MLBPA and League Expected to Resume ‘Core Economic’ Discussions Soon

The league and the MLBPA are sitting down for another pair of bargaining sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. Per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the meetings will cover, in theory, less argumentative topics.

MLB leaders and the union are expected to restart talks on core economic at the end of the week or early next week but other important yet less contentious issues are on the agenda today and tomorrow. Those include the drug policies, international play and many more items.

It will hopefully be a productive intermission from highly contentious topics. Including, but not limited: the luxury tax, pre-arbitration compensation, minimum salaries, and service-time manipulation. Those fires should be relit in the coming days according to Heyman.

Heyman added that the MLBPA don’t think the talks have begun in earnest. He also noted that the players proposed increasing the playoffs to a total of twelve teams. MLB also proposed a universal DH.

“Talks haven’t yet begun,” is the way one players side person put it. From here, players did offer a 12-team playoff format and MLB did propose a universal DH and drop free agent compensation. But on the biggest issues it’s been mostly baby steps on both sides.

Due to the current state of the negotiations, many experts believe that spring training is not likely to start on time. ESPN’s Jeff Passan characterized that starting spring training on time would be “miraculous”.

The meeting between the Major League Baseball Players Association and MLB is over. Little progress was made. The on-time opening of spring training at this point is in grave danger and, frankly, would take a miraculous deal coming together to rescue. A delay feels inevitable.

While MLB and the MLBPA battle over the terms of the new CBA, there’s growing concern that 2022 Opening Day could also be delayed.
