This weekend I have…10 minutes, and I’m gentle.
‘quite old’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
Viral clips (in Japanese, with subtitles) of this Japanese serial pop up from time to time, but now 20 episodes have made their way to Netflix. On each installment, cute kids, usually between 2 and 4 years old, do their first jobs on their own – going to the market, taking shirts to the cleaners, bringing Dad an apron. They often walk several blocks, cross busy streets and meet dozens of people on their stays, but have zero sense of danger, only freedom and pride. If you care about pedestrian safety, or you love kids’ milestones, check it out. And prepare to cry.
… an hour, and I miss “GLOW”.
‘Dirty Lines’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
God bless those ragtag crews in period costumes who approach some kind of sensual or dayclass effort with wholesome camaraderie; Maybe we are them, may we get to know them, may we keep doing bubbly, flashy shows about them. This six-part Dutch drama (in Dutch, with subtitles or dubs) begins in 1989 and follows the early days of phone sex lines in the Netherlands. It has the up-and-coming energy of “Deutsche 83” and some of the technical excitement of “Halt and Catch Fire”, but the real draw is the happy, ambient, supportive horn that reminds me of “Lovesick” and “Sex” in particular. education.”
… an hour, and I love chatty-family shows.
‘Cecilia’
When to watch: Now, on to Paramount+.
Mariana Trevino stars as Cecilia in this Mexican import (in Spanish, with subtitles), a mother seeking teenage children, a business on the verge of a major transition, needy exiles and sick parents. It’s so stressed that she has a stroke, which means she can no longer be the Martyr Giving Tree; Instead, everyone has to adjust to some new dynamics. It’s a lot more primitive than “Better Things”, more soap, but if you like that show “I have 900 people in my house, and they’re all yelling at me… but that’s really how I grow up.” Am!” Vibe, look at it.
