Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, has raised $2 billion from Sony and the group behind Lego in the latest bet on the metaverse.
The American business was valued at $31.5 billion in a private investment round. It said the funds would help “advance the company’s vision” to build the metaverse, a virtual realm where users can interact without being physically in the same space.
Sony and Kirkbi, the family-owned holding company behind the Lego Group, each put up $1 billion. Epic “remains controlled” by Tim Sweeney, its founder and chief executive, the company said.
It is the latest investment that Sony, one of the industry’s dominant players, has made in the sector. Earlier this year the Japanese conglomerate unveiled a $3.6 billion
