It’s always interesting when siblings make it big in the film industry, given how cutthroat its landscape is. Some movies have reached great heights like Donnie Darko and Good Will Hunting, yet many fans remain unaware that sibling pairs had significant roles to play in them.
Popular siblings like the Olsen sisters and the Affleck brothers are well-known to the average moviegoer, but most can’t name all the movies they’ve starred in together. To this end, it’s interesting to look into the films that popular actors have starred in with their siblings. Some weren’t as big a success as they could’ve while others remain known to the mainstream audience.
10 Jake And Maggie Gyllenhaal
The mystery behind the protagonist’s ability and the many insightful quotes in Donnie Darko is best remembered by fans. What many forget is that real-life siblings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal played brother and sister here as well, with Jake in the lead role.
The pair had worked together almost a decade earlier in A Dangerous Woman, where the siblings had minor roles. The actors have both since made it big with blockbuster movies and critically acclaimed dramas, so there will definitely be greater interest if they were to collaborate now.
9 Owen And Luke Wilson
There have been quite a few movies featuring the Wilson brothers, with Owen and Luke also working with Andrew Wilson. Luke and Owen have been part of Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, but also appeared in a cameo in Around the World in 80 Days as the Wright Brothers.
The pair haven’t worked together in almost two decades by this point, but that might be due to the rise in their names as Hollywood stars. Many Wes Anderson fans still consider the films that feature the Wilson brothers as among the best yet to be made by the director.
8 Ben And Casey Affleck
Among the best films starring Ben Affleck over the years, his collaboration with his brother Casey has produced some of the finer ones. The pair were first seen together in Chasing Amy, although Casey had a minor role there. The brothers followed up with the most well-known collaboration in Good Will Hunting.
They were seen in starring roles in 200 Cigarettes not long after, which remains the last time they were onscreen. However, Ben directed Casey in his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone, and the film is credited with reviving both brothers’ careers following its positive critical reception.
7 Shawn And Marlon Wayans
There was a time when Shawn and Marlon Wayans ruled the roost in the comedy genre with a string of hits. They first made their debuts in I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, followed by Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.
The Scary Movie films brought them their biggest commercial success, with the siblings then working together in White Chicks, Little Man, and Dance Flick. Shawn Wayans has taken a step back from acting ever since, which has meant the brothers haven’t shared the screen for over a decade and running.
6 Vera And Taissa Farmiga
Vera and Taissa Farmiga have an age difference of 21 years, but the sisters enjoy a close relationship that has translated onscreen. Taissa made her debut in Higher Ground, appearing as the younger version of Vera’s character. They then shared the screen in At Middleton, where Taissa played Vera’s daughter.
The sisters have since focused on individual projects, although they do have another association through the Conjuring universe, with Taissa Farmiga starring in The Nun that is a prequel to The Conjuring that Vera stars in as the main character.
5 Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made a career out of starring together, with the twin sisters delivering hits on a consistent basis on TV and the big screen. Their careers were exclusively about movies and shows centering around sibling-based stories until they retired from acting and switched to fashion
The sisters have a long list of movies, including To Grandmother’s House We Go, Double, Double, Toil and Trouble, How the West Was Fun, It Takes Two, Billboard Dad, Passport to Paris, Switching Goals, Our Lips Are Sealed, Winning London, Holiday in the Sun, Getting There, When in Rome, The Challenge, and New York Minute.
4 Tia And Tamera Mowry
Tia and Tamera Mowery gained fame when they starred in the hugely successful series Sister, Sister. The pair followed it up by simultaneously starring in movies while continuing their TV careers. Their collaboration with Disney produced the popular movie Twitches, which then had a sequel Twitches Too.
The sisters first appeared in a film together in 2000’s Seventeen Again, where their younger brother Tahj Mowry also had a main role. While they have appeared on TV in recent times, the sisters have rarely starred in movies over the last decade, making their earlier collaborations the material fans can find them in together.
3 Charlie Sheen And Emilio Estevez
There have been many films that star the Sheen brothers, with the two collaborating on a few as well. Charlie Sheen first appeared in a movie led by Emilio Estevez in Wisdom, where he had a minor role to play. However, he and Estevez had starring parts in Young Guns, a western action drama.
The pair have since been seen together one other time in Rated X, where they also played brothers. The siblings haven’t appeared in as many films in the last decade, with Sheen stepping away from acting for the most part while Estevez has been seen more on the small screen.
2 Hilary And Haylie Duff
Hilary Duff played a dual role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie as the titular protagonist and Isabella Parigi, where her sister Haylie provided the vocals for the Isabella character’s singing voice. The sisters then appeared onscreen years later in Material Girls.
It remains their only collaboration in the feature film department, with the movie based on the novel Sense and Sensibility. Material Girls didn’t taste any critical or commercial success, although fans at least got to see this sibling pair share the screen.
1 John And Joan Cusack
Much like the Olsen twins, John and Joan Cusack have been prolific acting pairs. They’ve starred in as many as 10 movies over the years, starting from 1983’s Class, where the siblings had a minor role but announced their arrival on the big screen.
They have since starred in Grandview, U.S.A., Sixteen Candles, Broadcast News, Say Anything, Grosse Pointe Blank, Cradle Will Rock, High Fidelity, Martian Child, and War, Inc. While some of their appearances have been cameos or small parts, their collaboration in Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, and War Inc. saw them receive praise for the chemistry they had onscreen.
